"My father was an automobile engineer, so I was always interested in car culture. AutoWeek Magazine was my internship to better understand the auto industry. After I began to test drive various cars, I discovered joy and freedom in my work. My perspective on the automobile industry changed dramatically when I moved to New York City. I have test-driven well over 2000 cars and written for more than 150 publications. There are serious consequences if they aren't. Last year, more women than men were killed in auto accidents because we aren't part of equal research and development. We don't have major media companies focused on women in car coverage. This is why we created Le Car.
Take the Long Way Home to Yourself
Many consider owning a car of a certain make and model a status symbol. Others see their car as a refuge. Warren was on his way to freedom when he drove for the first time since escaping a relationship rife with domestic violence.
"I was in an abusive marriage during my twenties, and I stopped driving then. The majority of physical violence occurred while I was sitting in the passenger seat. Warren said that she fought to get up the courage to leave, and eventually decided to press domestic violence charges against her husband. "A New York City writer friend offered me a place for the night. My mother suggested I drive across the country to start a new lifestyle. As my confidence, driving skills, and trust in my abilities grew, I felt empowered when I arrived. I was empowered by car journalism, which gave me a purpose and an income. I was going through a very difficult time in my own life, and this creative pursuit helped me heal.
Warren and Henriette Warren decided to start a business together years later at another intersection. Warren was retired from a career of two decades as a social worker in the midwest.
My father died one month after the birth of my daughter. At that time, I was working at The Verge as a transportation editor, doing interesting work about the future of mobility. This profound change in my life forced me to reevaluate my purpose and see how I could help other women. My friends also complained about how difficult it was to research cars and how to use them once they had purchased them. Her mother worked in partnership for decades with her father, a motor city car marketer. My mom and I have always had a close relationship. We created a business model that would not create the same problems for women who feel frustrated at being taken advantage of by car dealers and confused by all the transportation options available once they own their cars.
